Google Made AI Results More Link-Friendly
Field Notes · DOVR Retailer Intelligence — May 11, 2026
"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." — Albert Einstein
The 60-Second Version
- A US-Iran deal may be close. Trump halted military escorts through Hormuz, citing progress on a 14-point framework. Oil dropped 15% on the news — then spiked back on fresh clashes. Gas is at $4.50+. Markets are whipsawing. Nothing is signed yet.
- Google made AI results more link-friendly. May 6 update added more inline links, end-of-response link suggestions, forum previews, and desktop hover previews inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. More visibility for sites that get cited. This is a meaningful shift.
- Three more legacy retailers — Unclaimed Freight (52 years), McKinstry's (168 years), Greenbaum (67 years) — are closing. All retiring owners, no successors.
- Core Web Vitals are now scored as a composite. Failing even one metric (LCP, INP, CLS) creates a compounded ranking penalty. Sites that pass all three get stronger ranking benefits.
- AI-driven orders on Shopify up 13x in Q1. Traffic up 8x. Agentic commerce has gone from experimental to mainstream.
- Section 301 excess capacity hearings started May 5. 16 economies under investigation. Permanent tariff authority continues taking shape.
Tariffs & Trade
- Section 301 excess capacity hearings began May 5 at the ITC. 16 economies under investigation. Forced labor hearings (60 economies) wrapped April 28–May 1.
- USTR remains on accelerated timeline — permanent tariff authority before Section 122 expires July 24.
- 25% tariff on imported upholstered wooden furniture, kitchen cabinets, and vanities stays in place through 2026. The planned increase to 50% (cabinets) and 30% (furniture) was delayed one year.
- Section 232 full-value tariffs still in effect. Duties up to 50% on products with steel/aluminum/copper.
- IEEPA refund portal (CAPE) still open. $127B eligible. Refunds in 60–90 days.
- Vietnam at 42% of US furniture imports. China at 16% and falling. Both are under Section 301 investigation.
Action: Map supply chain against the 16 excess capacity economies. File IEEPA refunds if not done. Model pricing for post-July tariff scenarios.
Consumer & Retail
- Gas crossed $4.50. A possible Iran deal sent oil down 15% briefly — Brent hit $96, WTI hit $88 — but clashes in the Strait of Hormuz sent prices right back up. Nothing is signed. Markets are volatile.
- If a deal happens: relief at the pump takes months, not days. If it doesn't: gas keeps climbing. Plan for both.
- Three more legacy retailers closing: Unclaimed Freight (PA, 52 years), McKinstry's Home Furnishings (WI, 168 years), Greenbaum Home Furnishings (WA, 67 years). All retiring owners with no succession plan.
- The closure pattern is clear: family-owned, multi-generational retailers are exiting. High interest rates, low housing inventory, and economic uncertainty are the drivers. Industry sales still down 8% since 2022.
- Consumer sentiment still at historic lows. Furniture remains the #1 desired expensive purchase — but actual sales continue declining.
Action: Lead with entry-point products (decor, lighting, accents under $500). Make bigger purchases feel safe. Review delivery pricing against $4.50+ gas. Communicate cost drivers transparently.
AI & Search
Google updated AI Overviews and AI Mode on May 6. Five changes that matter:
- More inline links inside AI responses — more chances to get clicked
- Link suggestions at the end of AI responses — "where to go next"
- Forum discussion previews surfaced inside AI results
- Desktop hover previews when users mouseover inline links
- Subscription-based sources highlighted for logged-in users
This is a meaningful shift. Google is making AI results more link-friendly, not less. The sites getting cited in AI responses now get more visibility than before.
- Core Web Vitals are now scored as a composite. LCP, INP, and CLS are aggregated. Passing all three = stronger ranking benefit. Failing even one = compounded penalty. This is no longer three separate boxes to check.
- AEO framework still the playbook. Chrome 146 WebMCP still live. AI-referred traffic still converts 42% better.
- 93% of AI Mode searches still end without a click — but the May 6 update gives cited sites more link surface area.
Action: Run Core Web Vitals audit — all three metrics must pass. Create content designed for AI citation (buying guides, comparisons). Check if your pages are showing up in AI Overview link suggestions.
Agentic Commerce
- AI-driven orders on Shopify up 13x in Q1 2026. Traffic up 8x YoY.
- UCP live across Google, Microsoft Copilot, Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, BigCommerce, PayPal, Stripe. 4,014+ verified stores.
- Agentic commerce has crossed from experimental to mainstream. McKinsey: $3–5T global opportunity by 2030.
- Product data quality remains the only gating factor. Incomplete titles, missing dimensions, vague descriptions = invisible to every AI platform.
- The Google AI Overview update (May 6) means sites cited by AI now get even more link visibility. Product pages that AI recommends will see more clicks than before.
Action: Audit product catalog — titles, dimensions, materials, descriptions. One cleanup serves every platform. This is still the single highest-leverage action.
Design Direction
- High Point direction holding: "Collage" aesthetic, walnut, cream, skirted silhouettes, swivel seating, wellness-driven design.
- The closure wave is reinforcing the trend: warm, personal, functional. The mass-market grey/cool/minimal era is over.
- Wellness features now standard at every price point: heated seats, adjustable lumbar, circadian lighting.
- Storage is expected, not extra. Multifunctional furniture is baseline.
- Skirted and curved silhouettes continue building across categories.
Action: Update room set photography to warm palette. Source to High Point direction. Feature wellness and comfort benefits in product descriptions.
Social Commerce
- TikTok Shop: $23B+ projected this year. Fee: 3.5% GMV + 1% during campaigns.
- Social commerce overall: $100B+ this year.
- Furniture entry point: decor, lighting, accents, textiles.
- Winning format: short-form video in real rooms. Original content beats brand reshares.
- Social + agentic commerce continuing to converge. Building audiences now = structural advantage.
Action: One authentic room walkthrough per week beats ten studio shots. Start with entry-point products.
