High Point Recap, and Gas Hits $4.44

Field Notes · DOVR Retailer Intelligence — May 4, 2026

"What got you here won't get you there." — Marshall Goldsmith

The 60-Second Version

  • Gas hit $4.44 per gallon — up 30 cents in a single week. Strait of Hormuz still closed. Trump rejected Iran's latest proposal. Oil at $102–108. Sub-$3 gas not expected until 2027.
  • High Point wrapped with the best energy in years. Direction confirmed: walnut, cream, coral, skirted silhouettes, swivel seating, "Collage" aesthetic, wellness-driven design.
  • AI orders on Shopify up 15x year-over-year. AI traffic up 8x. UCP live across Google, Microsoft Copilot, Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair. Product data quality = visibility.
  • Section 301 hearings ran April 28–29. Forced labor across 60 economies. Excess capacity hearings start May 5. Permanent tariff authority being built before Section 122 expires July 24.
  • Furniture sales declining MoM and YoY — the only major category doing so while being the #1 desired expensive purchase. The intent-to-action gap is the widest it's been.
  • Vietnam now supplies 42% of US furniture imports. China dropped to 16%.
  • AI-referred traffic converts 42% better than non-AI. 93% of AI Mode searches end without a click.

Tariffs & Trade

  • Section 301 hearings ran April 28–29 at the ITC. Forced labor investigation covers 60 economies. Testimony continued through May 1. Excess capacity hearings (16 economies) start May 5.
  • USTR is building permanent tariff authority before Section 122 expires July 24. This is the shift from emergency measures to durable trade policy.
  • Vietnam now supplies 42% of US furniture imports. China dropped sharply to 16% following a 39% decline in exports.
  • IEEPA refund portal (CAPE) live since April 20. Up to $127B eligible. Refunds in 60–90 days.
  • Section 232 tariffs still apply to full customs value of products with steel/aluminum/copper. Duties up to 50%. Metal bed frames, table bases, shelving, hardware — all hit.
  • Section 122 holds at 10%. The 15% increase was never implemented.

Action: Know which of the 60+16 investigated economies your supply chain touches. File IEEPA refunds. Review metal-component SKUs.

Consumer & Retail

  • Gas at $4.44. Up 30 cents in one week — biggest weekly spike since the ceasefire. Strait of Hormuz still closed. Oil $102–108. Trump rejected Iran's latest deal proposal.
  • Energy Secretary says sub-$3 gas won't happen until 2027. Even a deal brings slow relief.
  • Sentiment at 47.6 (historic low). But core retail sales +0.41% MoM, +7.05% YoY. Six straight months up.
  • Income gap widening: high-income spending +2.9% YoY. Low-income: +1.1%.
  • Furniture declining MoM and YoY — the #1 desired expensive purchase that consumers aren't pulling the trigger on.
  • 17 furniture retailers closed or filed Q1. Industry sales down 8% since 2022. Housing market frozen.

Action: Review delivery/shipping pricing against $4.44 gas now. Lead with entry-point products. Make bigger purchases feel safe — reviews, guarantees, price transparency.

AI & Search

  • Google's AEO framework (April 11): five pillars for making sites usable by AI agents — discoverability, parsability, token efficiency, capability signaling, access control.
  • Chrome 146 shipped WebMCP. AI agents can now interact with your site tools directly. Being the tool an agent recommends = ranking #1.
  • AI-referred traffic converts 42% better (Adobe, April 16).
  • AI Overviews on 48% of queries (+58% YoY). Shopping queries: 14% (up 5.6x since Nov 2025).
  • 93% of AI Mode searches end without a click. Zero-click is the baseline now.
  • LLM bots crawl 3.6x more than Googlebot. Your site has three audiences: humans, crawlers, AI agents.

Action: Implement AEO. Add WebMCP tools to key pages. Create content designed for AI citation — buying guides, comparisons, material explainers.

Agentic Commerce

  • UCP went multi-platform. Microsoft Copilot + Merchant Center joined Google, Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, BigCommerce, PayPal, Stripe.
  • 4,014 verified stores live. WooCommerce entered (3 stores, up from zero in March).
  • AI orders on Shopify up 15x YoY. AI traffic up 8x.
  • World (Sam Altman) shipped AgentKit — proof-of-human credentials for AI shopping agents.
  • McKinsey: agentic commerce at $3–5T by 2030.
  • Product data quality is the gating factor. Incomplete titles, missing dimensions, vague descriptions = invisible to AI.

Action: Audit your entire catalog. One cleanup serves every AI platform. This is the single highest-leverage action right now.

Design — High Point Market Recap

  • Mood at Market was more upbeat than recent years.
  • Theme: "Collage" — mixing patterns, eras, styles. Collected-over-time aesthetic.
  • Wood: deep brown walnut dominant. Blonde is done.
  • Neutral: cream replaced grey. Green functions as a neutral.
  • Accents: coral, pastel pinks and blues, Oak Ocher, Maple Spice, deep Merlot.
  • Silhouettes: skirted is back — dining chairs, sofas, accent pieces. Curves everywhere.
  • Seating: swivel is the new standard. Cushier, bigger, bolder.
  • Wellness: heated seats, adjustable lumbar, massage, circadian lighting. Now standard, not premium.
  • Storage: expected, not optional. Dual-purpose is baseline.
  • Scale: designers asking brands to go bigger — oversized mirrors, large-scale murals.
  • Motifs: birds, oversized florals, heritage textiles.
  • Takeaway: retailers buying cautiously but specifically. Warm, personal, functional.

Social Commerce

  • TikTok Shop: $23B+ projected this year. Half of US social shoppers buying there. Fee: 3.5% GMV + 1% during campaigns.
  • Social commerce overall: $100B+ this year.
  • Furniture hasn't arrived on social yet. Entry point: decor, lighting, accents, textiles.
  • Winning format: short-form video in real rooms. Original content beats brand reshares.
  • Original High Point content (showroom tours, product reveals) getting highest engagement this week.
  • New signal: social commerce + agentic commerce converging into a single discovery funnel.

Action: Share original Market content on social while it's fresh. One authentic walkthrough beats ten studio shots.
