Google I/O Rebuilt Search Around AI
Field Notes — 60-Second Brief · Week of May 26, 2026
"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." — John F. Kennedy
The 60-Second Brief
This is the biggest AI search week in history. Google I/O (May 20–21) rebuilt Search around AI. Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default model in AI Mode — 1 billion monthly users, queries doubling quarterly. Google launched the biggest upgrade to its search box in 25 years — AI-powered, intent-anticipating, dynamically expanding. Information Agents are coming this summer — they'll monitor the entire web for you and send synthesized updates. Custom Generative UI means Search can now build interactive layouts, charts, and simulations in real time.
Then on May 21, Google launched its May 2026 core update — the tightest back-to-back cadence since Penguin. 48% of all searches now show an AI answer at the top. Position 1 CTR dropped from 27% to 11% when AI features appear. But sites cited in AI Overviews get 35% more organic clicks.
Oil remains volatile — $100–$144 range this month, Hormuz losses at 1 billion barrels. Shopify Agentic Storefronts live by default — AI orders 13x, AOV up 30%.
